This is my University work section all work from my BA (hon's) Degree Web Design is displayed here for all years.
So where did the 2nd semester go to? seems so quick? ahh well onto writing my review of the year I suppose :D. Well ill start with the negative so I can end on positives this time :)
So back again are the Sound/Video & Photography briefs and again I will challenge the reason we have them on the course as briefs? Sure have workshops on them giving us the knowledge it brings, but can the course, at least for future years, please turn these briefs into 1or 2 bigger projects related more to the course we are on? I'd like to see a project given to, say... the Web Design students, where we create an interactive site for younger users that incorporates sound, photos and video, thus bringing all 3 smaller briefs into one more appropriate one? anyway that's my thoughts on the annoying smaller video/sound & photo briefs we have.
And here we go again, its that little gem that annoys everyone on the course to tears and death, Contextual Practice!!!! Boooooo!!! How about for once the course leaders actually let us so some context actually relating to the course were on? semester 2 brought us an essay on Art, it's history and its effects in modern society! (that is a summarisation of several different choices given to us) NONE! of us want to do this work! give us something related to web design or games design etc, or do you simply don't give one care for our needs?.
Ok so the negative out the way, Positives and there were many of them, Information Architecture was a great project and I believe everyone was happy doing this, as to was Communication and the Community, again a great long project we all could get our teeth into.
On a personal note, I've been very impressed with my self tuition into PHP and what I've managed to teach myself, PHP is 100% greater than HTML and although you still need to know HTML and for us to teach anyone that doesn't know it, I really think this should be taught to web design students; of all years, in place of the greatly annoying and tedious Flash.
So to wrap things up, in the end I have actually enjoyed the year, yes i've mentioned a lot of negatives but overall there are more positives, a big thank you to all the lecturers for their help when its been needed and am looking forward to another year improving my web design skills.
